Paraguayan Politician Wiens Calls for Unity with Independent Judgment

Arnoldo Wiens, a dissident presidential hopeful within Paraguay's Colorado Party, has articulated his vision for party unity, stressing the critical importance of maintaining independent judgment. Speaking at a political gathering in Colonia Independencia, Guairá, Wiens advocated for a form of unity that allows for responsible criticism and correction of internal party matters.

Wiens, who is seeking the presidential nomination under the Colorado Añetete movement, attended the meeting to support José Resquín's bid for mayor of Colonia Independencia in the upcoming October municipal elections. The event also saw the presence of Guairá Governor César Luis Sosa and former senator Rodolfo Friedmann. Wiens, a former Minister of Public Works, is currently facing charges related to the alleged diversion of school snack funds during his tenure as governor of Guairá.

During the meeting, which affirmed a "spirit of unity" for the municipal elections, Wiens reiterated his commitment to strengthening the party. "Everything within List 1, nothing outside List 1," he declared, underscoring his focus on internal party cohesion. He believes this unity is essential for the Colorado Party to win a significant number of municipalities and reclaim those currently held by opposing parties.

Wiens further elaborated that this unity must be built upon "preserving independence of criterion, maintaining a responsible position to point out what needs to be corrected, and always acting with adherence to party institutions." He expressed his intention to continue supporting unity efforts nationwide, anticipating reciprocal commitment to his political project for the 2028 general elections.
