Pekanbaru Inaugurates Tunas Kencana Camping Ground to Boost Environment and Tourism

Pekanbaru is embracing a greener future with the official inauguration of the Tunas Kencana Camping Ground, a significant step in developing environmentally-focused public spaces and boosting local tourism. Mayor Agung Nugroho led the ceremony on Saturday evening, May 2, 2026, marking the revitalization of the Danau Bandar Kayangan area, which had long been underutilized. This project underscores the city's commitment to creating sustainable and engaging public facilities for its residents.

The inauguration was celebrated with an environmental awareness camping event, drawing hundreds of students and scout members. Mayor Nugroho participated in the camping activities, alongside local government officials, demonstrating a hands-on approach to the initiative. The event featured a series of eco-friendly activities, including tree planting, releasing birds back into the wild, and stocking the lake with fish – all symbolic gestures of the city's dedication to environmental stewardship.

Mayor Nugroho expressed his commitment to making this an ongoing agenda, stating, "If it provides benefits, of course, we will continue it in the future." The camping ground, spanning approximately 150 hectares, is slated for development as a Blue-Green Open Space (RTHB), envisioned to serve ecological, environmental education, and community social functions. This development offers Pekanbaru residents a local alternative for nature-based recreation, eliminating the need for extensive travel.

Now people don't need to travel far. There is already a natural tourist spot here that can be enjoyed with family.

The initiative aligns with broader goals of creating healthy, productive, and sustainable public spaces. Hj Sulastri, Head of the Pekanbaru City Scout Branch, highlighted the crucial role of camping activities in shaping the character of young people, instilling a sense of responsibility, togetherness, and environmental consciousness. Looking ahead, the Tunas Kencana Camping Ground is set to become a hub for educational activities, youth development, and community engagement, further enhancing Pekanbaru's appeal as a destination for nature tourism.
