Philippines Monsoon Rains Kill 8, Leave 1 Missing as 486,000 People Affected

Monsoon rains, amplified by Tropical Cyclones Luis and Maymay, have claimed eight lives and left one person missing across the Philippines. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported the fatalities, which include victims of rockslides and drowning in Rizal, Batangas, Benguet, and La Union.

The severe weather has impacted a significant portion of the population, with at least 124,000 families, totaling 486,000 individuals, affected by widespread flooding and heavy downpours. Seven injuries were also reported in Benguet due to landslides and accidents.

Damage assessments indicate that 170 houses were affected, with 13 completely destroyed and 157 partially damaged. Infrastructure has suffered an estimated loss of 105.5 million pesos (approximately Rp30.95 billion), while agricultural losses reached 3.5 million pesos (approximately Rp1.02 billion). The government has distributed aid valued at 13.93 million pesos (approximately Rp4.08 billion) to those affected.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has urged government agencies to maintain heightened vigilance as the nation grapples with the aftermath of the storms. Affected regions span across Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Western Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, and the Cordillera Administrative Region.
