PM Orders Increased Power Imports, Development of Floating Plants to Ensure Energy Security

Prime Minister Le Minh Hung's directive to the Ministry of Industry and Trade underscores the critical importance of energy security for Vietnam's economic stability and development. The emphasis on preventing any electricity or fuel shortages, regardless of the circumstances, reflects a proactive approach to safeguarding national interests.

The strategy outlined involves a multi-pronged approach. Increasing electricity imports from neighboring Laos and China, particularly for the northern region, is a key immediate measure. This is complemented by the development of floating power plants to address urgent supply needs, showcasing innovative solutions in times of scarcity. Furthermore, the directive pushes for the acceleration of existing power projects and the development of renewable energy sources like rooftop solar, integrated with energy storage systems.

A significant focus is placed on the strategic review and update of the national power development plan (Power Development Plan 8). This includes resolving bottlenecks for solar and wind power projects that were previously eligible for preferential tariffs (FIT). The plan also considers the development of appropriately scaled coal-fired power plants, with a clear roadmap for emission control and eventual decommissioning, demonstrating a pragmatic balance between immediate energy needs and long-term environmental considerations. The Prime Minister has made it clear that the Ministry of Industry and Trade bears ultimate responsibility for ensuring the plan's successful execution and timely delivery of power projects, with provincial authorities also held accountable for driving project progress.
