Poland: Russian Hybrid Attacks at 'Unprecedented' Levels, Intelligence Service Says

Poland is sounding the alarm over a dramatic and 'unprecedented' surge in hybrid warfare tactics aimed at destabilizing the nation, with the Internal Security Agency (ABW) directly pointing fingers at its eastern neighbor, Russia. This stark assessment, detailed in the ABW's first public report since 2014, paints a worrying picture of escalating espionage and sabotage efforts that threaten Poland's security and its pivotal role within NATO and the European Union.

The statistics are alarming. The report reveals a tenfold increase in espionage investigations, with 69 cases logged in the last two years alone – a number equivalent to the previous three decades combined. This surge underscores a deliberate and intensified campaign by Russian intelligence services to infiltrate and disrupt Polish systems. The sheer volume of new cases, 48 in 2025 compared to 21 in 2024, indicates a rapidly escalating threat. Furthermore, 82 individuals have been charged with espionage in the past four years, with 62 currently in detention, highlighting the scale of the counter-intelligence operations underway.

What makes this situation particularly concerning for Poland is its strategic location. Bordering the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, as well as Ukraine and Belarus, Poland serves as a critical frontline state. The alleged Russian-orchestrated sabotage operations target not only military installations but also vital infrastructure and public buildings, aiming to sow chaos and undermine support for Ukraine. The ABW notes that Russian services are constantly evolving their methods, employing online intermediaries, cryptocurrency payments, and even collaborating with organized criminal networks to achieve their objectives.

While Belarus, a Russian ally, is also implicated in infiltration activities, particularly targeting exiled opposition groups, China's approach is noted as different, focusing more on economic and political influence. From a Polish perspective, the directness and intensity of the Russian hybrid attacks represent the most significant security challenge the country has faced in recent memory. Unlike Western media that might frame this as part of a broader geopolitical conflict, for Poland, it is an immediate, tangible, and existential threat demanding constant vigilance and robust defense.
