Police probe viral video of officers assaulting gold seller

The Police Command in Lagos State has launched an investigation into allegations of assault involving some of its officers, prompted by a viral video circulating on social media. The footage features a man, identified as a gold seller, who claims he was subjected to an assault by police officers in the Festac area.

According to him, although nothing incriminating was found during the search, the officers allegedly discovered a scale he uses to weigh gold and accused him of using it to measure cannabis.

According to the victim's account in the video, he was intercepted and searched while on his way to deliver a necklace. Although the search yielded no incriminating items, the officers allegedly accused him of using his gold-weighing scale to measure cannabis. The man stated he refused to go to the police station, asserting his innocence.

According to the victim, one of the officers struck him on the head with a gun before he was allegedly beaten.

He further alleged that the officers, who he claimed were not in proper uniform and arrived in an unregistered bus, attempted to force him into their vehicle. The victim reported that one officer struck him on the head with a gun before he was allegedly beaten.

The command said the officers involved had been identified as personnel attached to Area E Command.

In response to the video, the Lagos State Police Command confirmed via its X handle that an investigation has commenced. The officers involved have been identified as personnel from Area E Command. The State Commissioner of Police has directed the Area Commander to promptly bring the officers to the command headquarters for further inquiry and appropriate disciplinary measures. The command has also appealed to the victim to assist the investigation by contacting the Complaint Response Unit.
