Poorly equipped hikers rescued from Austrian glacier, must pay own rescue costs

A group of 36 hikers, including families with young children in strollers, had to be rescued by Austrian mountain rescue services after venturing onto dangerous terrain on the Pitztal glacier near Söldn. The tourists, hailing from Belgium, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Austria, were reportedly ill-prepared for the excursion.

The group began their trek from the upper station of the Wildspitzbahn gondola. However, they soon found themselves on challenging and hazardous terrain above 2,300 meters altitude, occasionally straying from marked paths. The situation escalated when two members of the group contacted emergency services via phone to request assistance.

Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident. Mountain rescuers, supported by a helicopter, managed to evacuate 14 individuals, four of whom were winched to safety. The remaining 22 members of the group were escorted back down to the valley on foot by the rescue team.

Despite the successful rescue, the Austrian authorities have stated that the hikers will be responsible for covering the costs associated with the extensive rescue operation. This decision underscores the importance of proper preparation and equipment when undertaking mountain activities, especially in potentially hazardous conditions.
