Portugal edges Chile 2-1 in fiery friendly ahead of World Cup qualifiers

Portugal concluded their international friendlies with a 2-1 victory over Chile in Oeiras, as they prepare for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers beginning June 11. The match, however, was disrupted by a heated exchange that led to both teams having a player sent off.

Portugal's midfielder Bruno Fernandes asserted his team's dominance throughout the match. "We were more dominant throughout the 90 minutes, we managed the game very well, especially when we had a lot of possession in the final third of the pitch," he stated.

Cristiano Ronaldo appeared in the starting lineup and nearly scored before halftime, but his goal was disallowed for offside. The game intensified before the first half concluded when Portugal's Rafael Leão and Chile's Ivan Román received red cards following a scuffle between players.

In the second half, Portugal regained control. Gonçalo Guedes opened the scoring in the 58th minute, and Fernandes doubled the lead with a long-range shot. Chile attempted a comeback with a late goal from Lucas Cepeda in injury time, but it proved insufficient to avoid defeat. Portugal is scheduled to play another friendly against Nigeria in Leiria before commencing their World Cup qualifying campaign in Group K.
