Prime Minister Inaugurates Re-excavation of Historic Ulashi Canal in Jashore

In a significant move to bolster agricultural productivity and water management, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today inaugurated the re-excavation of the historic Ulashi Canal in Jashore’s Sharsha upazila. This project, originally undertaken through voluntary labor in 1976 under the visionary leadership of Ziaur Rahman and widely known as the ‘Zia Canal,’ holds deep historical and practical importance for the region.

The re-excavation, spearheaded by the Bangladesh Water Development Board, aims to restore the nearly four-kilometer canal, ensuring its continued benefit to the local communities. The Prime Minister's participation, marked by the symbolic cutting of the first soil and the unveiling of the project's inauguration plaque, underscores the government's commitment to infrastructure development and agricultural support.

This initiative is part of a broader nationwide canal excavation and re-excavation program launched by the Prime Minister, reflecting a strategic focus on enhancing water resources across 54 districts. The Prime Minister's itinerary in Jashore also included laying the foundation stone for the Jashore Medical College Hospital and addressing a large public rally, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to regional development.
