Prosecutors' association warns of safety risks in new Uruguay office

The Uruguayan Association of Prosecutors has voiced serious concerns over the safety of its members and public defenders, citing inadequate conditions at a new building designated for sensitive units. The association's president, Claudia González, stated that the building, located on 25 de Mayo street, does not meet the minimum security requirements for officials, particularly those in the Homicides, Sexual Offenses, and Domestic Violence departments.

González emphasized that the Homicides unit requires heightened security measures, especially in light of organized crime's increasing presence in Uruguay. She described the situation as "inadmissible" and urged authorities to address the safety deficiencies urgently to ensure the continuity of justice services.

As a temporary measure, investigative files will remain at the 25 de Mayo location, but interviews with defendants will be conducted at the Centralized Penal Office on Juan Carlos Gómez street. The association president warned that this arrangement would cause "concrete delays" for both defendants and victims.

González also revealed that the association has not received any response from the acting Prosecutor General, Mónica Ferrero, regarding their safety concerns. The group is calling for swift action from competent authorities to guarantee secure working conditions and the uninterrupted operation of the justice system.
