'Proud Gyeongnam Person Award' nominations open for the year

Gyeongnam Province is once again calling for nominations for the 'Proud Gyeongnam Person Award,' an initiative aimed at celebrating individuals who have made significant contributions to the region. This year's call for nominations, open until August 31, seeks to build upon the foundation laid last year, despite the initial challenges in garnering sufficient nominees.

Last year, the Gyeongnam Province had difficulty finding candidates for the 'Proud Gyeongnam Person Award,' but this year, attention is focused on whether it will yield abundant results.

The award, established to recognize those who have quietly dedicated themselves to the community and illuminated Gyeongnam, spans six diverse fields: economy, culture, arts, sports, social contribution, good deeds, filial piety, family, safety, environment, and other contributions to provincial administration. While the award itself carries no monetary prize, recipients will be honored at the Gyeongnam Province Day ceremony on October 14 and will have their names inscribed in the planned 'Hall of Fame' set to open in 2028.

Last year, Gyeongnam Province created the 'Proud Gyeongnam Person Award' to discover individuals who have quietly dedicated themselves to the community and brought honor to Gyeongnam, serving as role models for the residents of Gyeongnam Province.

Last year's inaugural ceremony saw only 24 nominations across all categories, averaging just four per sector. The extended nomination period and a subsequent call for nominations from general citizens yielded only 33 recipients in total. Notably, the social contribution field was heavily favored, with no award given in the safety and environment category. This year, organizers have learned from these experiences, extending the nomination period and slightly relaxing eligibility requirements. They have also introduced a requirement for nominees to agree to a background check and potential revocation of the award should any issues arise post-selection.

In the first year, only 24 people were nominated in total across the six categories. On average, there were only 4 people per category.

From a South Korean perspective, particularly within Gyeongnam, this award represents an important effort to foster local pride and recognize unsung heroes. While international news might overlook such local accolades, for the residents of Gyeongnam, these awards are vital in highlighting the diverse talents and dedication within the province. The challenges faced in the first year reflect a common issue in recognizing contributions outside of highly visible fields, and the adjustments made this year show a commitment to ensuring the award's success and relevance in celebrating the true spirit of Gyeongnam.

Learning from the difficulties in candidate nominations in the first year, this year, we have extended the candidate nomination period compared to last year and slightly eased the eligibility requirements.
