PSDB recruits capital city mayors to drive party recovery

The Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB) is strategically bolstering its ranks by attracting mayors from state capitals, aiming to re-establish itself as a significant political force.

Following a period of reduced representation, the PSDB is focusing on consolidating its influence by bringing prominent local leaders into its fold. This strategy is evident in recent and upcoming affiliations. Mayor Léo Bezerra of João Pessoa is expected to join the party from the PSB, and the PSDB anticipates the affiliation of Alysson Bestene, the current mayor of Rio Branco, who is presently with the PP, before the elections.

Earlier this year, the party welcomed two other capital city mayors: Igor Normando, who leads Belém, and JHC, who previously administered Maceió before stepping down in April to contest the governorship of Alagoas. These moves are part of the PSDB's broader objective to increase its representation in the Chamber of Deputies, with a target of electing approximately 30 federal deputies in the upcoming elections.

The party's ambition extends beyond immediate electoral gains; it harbors a long-term goal of presenting a centrist presidential candidate in the 2030 general elections. This concerted effort to rebuild and expand its base underscores the PSDB's determination to regain national relevance and influence in Brazilian politics.
