Relatives Accuse Kaunas Medics of Negligence in Mother's Death; Hospital Investigates

A family in Lithuania is alleging serious medical malpractice, accusing doctors at Kaunas Oncology Hospital of causing the death of their mother through negligence. The complaint details a harrowing experience where crucial diagnostic tests appear to have been omitted or mishandled, leading to a delayed and potentially incorrect initial diagnosis.

We were told that the biopsy was performed on March 19, and the results would take about two weeks or longer. However, it later turned out that at least part of these tests may not have been performed at all.

According to the relatives, the patient, admitted in March 2026, underwent only a blood test and chest X-ray initially. Despite assurances of a CT scan and biopsy, the family later discovered the biopsy may not have been performed at all. When the patient's condition worsened, further tests revealed advanced lung cancer, a diagnosis that was allegedly not clearly communicated or acted upon promptly by the attending physician.

The family's distress is compounded by suspicions regarding the prescribed medication, a strong opioid, which they believe may have further compromised the patient's breathing. They also cite instances of poor communication, misleading information, and unprofessional conduct from medical staff, including alleged requests for personal favors. The patient passed away on April 17, 2026, with her family convinced that lost time due to alleged medical oversights significantly impacted her treatment and survival chances.

Kauno klinikos (Kaunas Clinics) has responded by stating that the patient was transferred from Marijampolė Hospital with a suspected lung condition, which was later confirmed as advanced cancer with complications at Kaunas. While acknowledging the patient's critical state, the hospital maintains that necessary procedures were performed and treatment was administered. Nevertheless, an internal investigation has been initiated to address the serious concerns raised by the grieving family, reflecting a commitment to transparency amid a deeply sensitive situation.
