Romania approves biodiversity strategy, securing 1 billion euros from PNRR

Romania's government has taken significant steps to advance its environmental and recovery goals, notably approving the National Biodiversity Strategy 2026-2030. This strategic document, crucial for fulfilling commitments under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), unlocks a vital 1 billion euro tranche of funding.

Interim Environment Minister Diana Buzoianu highlighted the strategy's importance, stating it allows Romania to meet a PNRR reform milestone. The plan establishes a clear framework for biodiversity protection, detailing responsible institutions, timelines, potential funding sources, and measurable outcomes. This approval ensures that 1 billion euros from the PNRR will remain in the country for critical investments benefiting numerous communities.

Beyond biodiversity, the government addressed the fifth PNRR payment request, urging those facing delays to finalize outstanding documents by July 30, 2026. Additionally, Romania secured a $1.7 million grant from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) to modernize heating and cooling systems through the SHARP program. This grant will fund studies, technical assistance, and investment preparation, with the Ministry of Energy overseeing its implementation.
