Romanian environmental agency head disputes minister's claims on illegal dump oversight

The head of Romania's Environmental Guard in Timiș has publicly refuted claims by the interim Environment Minister, Diana Buzoianu, that the agency overlooked a significant illegal waste dump in Săcălaz. Luci Mușuroi, the chief commissioner, asserted that the agency has been active in the locality, conducting 35 inspections over the past five years. These actions resulted in fines and warnings amounting to 180,000 lei.

Mușuroi’s statement, posted on Facebook, directly challenged the minister’s criticism following a joint inspection where the illegal dump was discovered. He noted that the landowner has since been identified and has begun processing the waste on-site. The Environmental Guard Timiș stated it would continue its oversight until compliance measures are fully met.

Zilele trecute am primit cu încredere vizita doamnei ministru Buzoianu, alături de domnul prefect Paul Finta, într-o acțiune de control în localitatea Săcălaz (...). Astăzi, în urma acțiunilor Gărzii de Mediu Timiș, proprietarul terenului a fost identificat și a început deja să concaseze deșeurile în grămezi pe amplasament. Vom continua acțiunea de control până când măsurile de conformare sunt respectate și dau rezultate.

The chief commissioner dismissed the notion that the agency prioritizes minor issues while ignoring larger illegal dumps, calling such perceptions a "misunderstanding." He also drew attention to the severe understaffing within the Timiș branch, where 12 inspectors are responsible for more than 90 localities. Mușuroi emphasized the agency's political neutrality, stating it refuses any form of political subordination or pressure.
