Romanian train hits truck, causing fire and railway damage

A passenger train collided with a cement truck at a railway crossing in Neamț County, Romania, on Thursday evening. The train, identified as IR 1952 and operated by CFR Călători, was en route from Suceava to Constanța when it struck the truck around 10 p.m. The collision occurred at a crossing equipped with an automatic signaling system.

The power line that supplies electric locomotives was broken on the second track, and CFR announces that the damages are significant and require complex technical interventions.

The impact ignited the truck, leading to a significant fire that required intervention from emergency services. The accident also caused substantial damage to the railway infrastructure. The overhead contact line powering electric locomotives was severed, with CFR SA reporting extensive damage necessitating complex repairs.

CFR dispatched two rail maintenance vehicles from Bacău and Roman to address the damage. Teams from the Iași Regional Railway Branch are assessing the infrastructure and organizing repair work. CFR stated that power would only be restored and circulation resumed after all safety checks are completed. The exact causes of the accident are under investigation by relevant authorities.
