Russian Communist Party Celebrates May Day with Rally Near Bolshoi Theatre

In Moscow, militants and supporters of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (KPRF) gathered near the iconic Bolshoi Theatre, holding a rally to commemorate 'Spring and Labour Day.' The event, held by the statue of Karl Marx, saw traditional displays of Soviet flags and red carnations, underscoring the party's historical roots and enduring appeal to a segment of the Russian population.

Gennady Zyuganov, the long-standing leader of the KPRF, addressed the attendees, extending May 1st greetings and reflecting on the holiday's significance. He invoked the legacy of Soviet leaders Lenin and Stalin, suggesting that their "Leninist-Stalinist modernization" was instrumental in reunifying the Russian Empire under the new form of the Soviet Union, emphasizing the ideals of 'peace, work, friendship, and fraternity of peoples.'

Across Russia, communist organizations marked the day with various activities. In Astrakhan, a motorcade concluded at Lenin Square for a floral tribute. Novosibirsk saw a march and rally featuring a large Soviet flag, with calls to reclaim social achievements from the Soviet era and support KPRF candidates in upcoming September elections. However, not all gatherings proceeded smoothly; in Lipetsk, the local administration denied permission for a May Day demonstration, leading the KPRF committee to opt for a meeting with deputies instead, a decision that was subsequently upheld by the courts.

This celebration, while rooted in Soviet nostalgia, also serves as a platform for the KPRF to mobilize support ahead of the September elections. The party's continued emphasis on Soviet-era achievements and social welfare resonates with those who recall that period positively. Meanwhile, President Vladimir Putin acknowledged the day by awarding 'Hero of Labour' medals to distinguished individuals, including acclaimed actress Marina Neyolova, subtly aligning state recognition with the theme of labor and achievement, albeit without direct engagement with the KPRF's specific commemorations.
