Sartor Case: Prosecutors Seek Pre-Trial Detention for Michael Clark

Chilean prosecutors are pushing for pre-trial detention for five key figures in the ongoing investigation into alleged financial crimes linked to the Sartor Group. Among those targeted is businessman Michael Clark Varela, former president of the football club Azul Azul.

The request for the most severe precautionary measure was made by the Public Ministry at the close of a court session on Friday. This session concluded the presentation of charges, paving the way for discussions on the measures that will apply to the accused. Judge Paulina Moya confirmed the prosecution's intentions, stating that pre-trial detention was sought for Clark Varela, Pedro Pablo Larraín Mery, Carlos Emilio Larraín Mery, Rodrigo Bustamante García, and Sergio Yáñez Astete.

The investigation encompasses a total of 11 defendants. For the remaining six executives, Alfredo Harz Castro, Oscar Ebel Sepúlveda, Mauro Valdés Raczynski, Miguel León Núñez, Hugo Baranda Peralta, and Juan Carlos Jorquera Salhus, less stringent measures such as national residency requirements, periodic reporting, or house arrest will be debated.

Judge Moya suspended the hearing, announcing that the formalization process and the debate on precautionary measures will reconvene on Monday, August 3. On this date, the defense teams for the accused will present their arguments in response to the prosecution's requests.
