SDP Elects Gombe New National Chairman, Eyes 2027 Leadership

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has elected Professor Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe as its new National Chairman, signaling a renewed push for relevance in Nigeria's political landscape. At the party's national convention held in Bauchi, Gombe, alongside the newly sworn-in National Working Committee, vowed to offer transparent, committed, and patriotic leadership. His message resonated with a clear ambition: the SDP, he asserted, is the most qualified political platform poised to take over leadership in Nigeria, setting its sights firmly on the 2027 general elections.

Adding a critical edge to the convention's proceedings, the Chairman of the National Convention Committee, Usman Bugaje, did not shy away from criticizing the current administration. He painted a grim picture of Nigeria, citing pervasive insecurity, soaring petrol prices, rampant unemployment, and widespread poverty as major concerns. Bugaje also accused the ruling party of attempting to stifle opposition and shrink the democratic space, alleging that key institutions like the judiciary and the Independent National Electoral Commission have been compromised. From the perspective of the SDP, these are not mere challenges but symptoms of a failing system that their party aims to rectify.
