Search Underway for Six Missing at Sea Amid Severe Weather Warnings

A search and rescue operation is actively underway for six individuals missing in the waters near Fiji, as authorities issue a stark warning that ignoring weather advisories can have fatal consequences. The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji reported that a half-cabin fibreglass boat, which departed Namuka for Fulaga Island at 10 a.m. yesterday, has failed to arrive.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Fiji was activated after the vessel was reported overdue. While two other boats that left Namuka at the same time reached Fulaga safely, concerns are mounting for the missing craft. Coordinators have been working through the night and are now expanding the search with both air and surface assets, despite facing strong winds and rough seas.

Authorities fear the missing vessel may have been inadequately equipped with safety gear. The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji is strongly urging all mariners to strictly obey weather warnings and to avoid operating small craft in dangerous seas. Vessels in the vicinity of Namuka and Fulaga are asked to be on the lookout for a white half-cabin fibreglass boat powered by a 40-horsepower engine, carrying six people. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre at 1539 or the nearest police station.
