Searing heatwave across Egypt to break by Wednesday: EMA

Egypt is bracing for a continuation of a searing heatwave on Sunday, according to the Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA). High humidity levels are expected to make the heat feel even more intense, adding up to four degrees Celsius to the perceived temperature.

The EMA forecasts that the intense heat will persist across most of the country. Expected maximum temperatures on Sunday include 40C in Greater Cairo and Upper Egypt, 43C in southern Upper Egypt, 39C in Lower Egypt, 35C on the northeastern coast, and 31C on the northwestern coast. Across the nation, the perceived temperature could range from 41C to 44C.

However, a meteorologist at the EMA's Forecasting and Early Warning Center, Manar Ghanem, indicated that the heatwave is expected to break by Wednesday and Thursday. Temperatures are predicted to drop slightly to between 35C and 36C. Ghanem noted that while this decrease will occur, the continued high humidity will prevent the drop from feeling very noticeable, though overall conditions should improve.

In response to the extreme weather, the EMA has issued advisories for the public. These include avoiding direct sun exposure, drinking plenty of fluids, and wearing loose-fitting, light-colored cotton clothing to mitigate the effects of the heat.
