Soekarno-Hatta Airport Resumes Flights as Anak Krakatau Ash Clears

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport resumed operations after volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau forced the hub to close on Sunday, Sept. 6.

By Tuesday afternoon, the airport in Tangerang, Banten, had handled 324 flights, including 208 departures and 116 arrivals. Yudistiawan, the airport’s assistant deputy for communication and legal affairs, said all air corridors had reopened and routes to destinations including Medan and Aceh were safe.

All air corridors have been reopened. Routes to various destinations, including Medan and Aceh, are safe.

Flight services were gradually returning to normal after updated Notices to Airmen cleared routes across the region. Airport officials expected total aircraft movements to reach 896 by the end of Tuesday, carrying an estimated 113,000 passengers.

We recorded a significant spike in activity as flight schedules normalized.

Safety checks remained in place before takeoffs and landings. Ground crews periodically cleaned runways, taxiways and aprons to remove residual ash, while airlines had to inspect their aircraft under Ministry of Transportation directives.

Officials urged passengers affected by earlier delays or cancellations to check their flight status before traveling to the airport. Passengers who rescheduled were told to monitor their revised itineraries, while those with confirmed departures could proceed directly to Soekarno-Hatta.
