Sudden flood and landslide in Nepal kill at least 17 people

A sudden flood and subsequent landslide in Nepal have resulted in at least 17 confirmed deaths, with authorities still gathering information on missing persons. The Bhote Koshi River overflowed, causing widespread devastation in areas near the border with Tibet.

Officials suspect the flood was triggered by a glacial lake outburst in China's Tibet Autonomous Region. "We currently have confirmed data for only 26 missing police officers. We also have information about missing state tax collection service officers, hydroelectric power plant workers, and other people. However, we are still collecting data," said police spokesperson Abi Narayanas Kafle.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah announced that the Nepalese army and other security services have been mobilized for rescue operations, with additional forces being dispatched to the affected zone. Residents downstream of the Bhote Koshi have been issued warnings.

Local inhabitants described the flood as one of the most significant in decades. Video footage shared on social media depicts heavily damaged settlements along the border and surrounding regions. The floodwaters swept away several hydroelectric facilities and bridges, leaving thousands of travelers and trekkers stranded on the popular Langtang route.
