Thessaloniki: Car engulfed in flames after chase, three arrested for drugs

A dramatic incident unfolded in Thessaloniki, Greece, when a car burst into flames in Dendropotamos after its 40-year-old driver, an Armenian national, attempted to flee a police inspection. The driver engaged in a high-speed chase, executing dangerous maneuvers, which ultimately led to the vehicle becoming immobilized and its engine catching fire.

Police officers from the DI.AS. team spotted the vehicle and attempted to stop it. However, the driver refused to comply, accelerating and driving recklessly. He also resisted arrest, and officers discovered two packages of raw cannabis, which he had allegedly discarded earlier. The fire department extinguished the blaze. Further investigation revealed the driver lacked a valid driving license, resulting in significant fines.

During his transfer to the police station, the driver reported feeling unwell and was taken to a hospital in Thessaloniki, where he is currently receiving treatment. This incident is part of a larger police crackdown on drug offenses in the region, with three separate drug possession cases recorded within the last 24 hours.

In two other incidents, a 49-year-old man was arrested for attempting to swallow a small package of cocaine just before a police check. Separately, a 16-year-old was apprehended in Charilaou after discarding cannabis and a grinder while trying to evade police. The arrested individuals are expected to face legal proceedings.
