Three Groups Vie for Privatization of Argentina's Key Electricity Transporter

Argentina's energy sector is poised for a significant shift as the government of Javier Milei advances its privatization agenda, with three major business groups now qualified to bid for control of Transener, the nation's primary high-voltage electricity transporter. This move is a key component of the administration's broader strategy to reduce state intervention in the economy and attract private investment.

The Ministry of Economy has officially greenlit Central Puerto, Edenor, and a joint bid from Edison Transmisión and Genneia to participate in the next stage of the tender. The objective is to privatize the 50% stake held by the state-owned Energía Argentina (Enarsa) in Citelec, the company that holds a majority share in Transener. Pampa Energía currently owns the other 50% of Citelec, while the remaining shares of Transener are publicly traded.

Transener's strategic importance cannot be overstated; it manages the national high-voltage grid and also operates internationally in Brazil through Transener Internacional, alongside its domestic subsidiary Transba. For Argentinians, this privatization process represents a critical juncture.
