Thuringia Minister Pledges Full Support for Firefighters Amid Budget Concerns

In a reassuring address to the Thuringian Firefighters' Association, Interior Minister Georg Maier has pledged unwavering support for the state's volunteer firefighters, even amidst tight budgetary conditions. He specifically highlighted that crucial benefits like firefighter pensions and youth program subsidies will remain secure. Furthermore, Maier indicated positive developments regarding increased compensation for injuries sustained during service, signaling a commitment to the well-being of these vital emergency responders.

The firefighter pension and youth fire brigade lump sums will remain untouched.

However, the path forward is not without its challenges. A significant modernization project for the Thuringian State Fire and Rescue Academy in Bad Köstritz is encountering substantial headwinds. What was initially projected to cost around 75 million euros has ballooned to an estimated 129 million euros, with the completion date now pushed beyond the original 2034 target. This escalating cost and timeline pressure are attributed to factors including ongoing training operations and the need for a new development plan.

I am confident that we can implement the increase in compensation lump sums in a timely manner.

To tackle these delays head-on, a dedicated task force has been established, involving key state ministries and the construction authority. This collaborative effort aims to streamline coordination, accelerate decision-making, and proactively identify potential bottlenecks. The modernization of the fire academy is a critical undertaking, aimed at enhancing training capabilities for firefighters and rescue personnel. Despite the current pressures, the commitment to ensuring our firefighters have the best resources and support remains a top priority for the state government.
