Tinubu appoints special adviser on power

President Bola Tinubu has signaled a renewed commitment to revitalizing Nigeria's power sector with the appointment of Rilwan Babalola as Special Adviser on Power and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Power Sector Reset and Restoration. This strategic move, announced via a State House statement, aims to inject urgency and a strong execution focus into addressing the persistent challenges plaguing the nation's electricity supply.

Babalola, a former Minister of Power, is tasked with leading the administration's 'Renewed Hope Agenda' in the energy sector. The newly formed task force operates under a direct presidential mandate, designed to enhance coordination among various agencies and drive a comprehensive overhaul of the electricity value chain. Its mandate includes improving efficiency, restoring commercial viability, and implementing a 'performance before expansion' framework.

The task force's objectives are ambitious, focusing on reducing technical and commercial losses, strengthening cost discipline, and ensuring tariff integrity. Furthermore, it will concentrate on enhancing revenue assurance, improving grid stability, and promoting the productive use of power across key sectors. This restructuring, which also clarifies roles by redesignating the Office of the Special Adviser (Energy) to Special Adviser on Oil and Gas, underscores the administration's determination to deliver measurable improvements in power supply and sector performance for the benefit of all Nigerians.
