Toll collection to begin, with single-trip charges starting at 1,500 krona

The new Ring Road around Hornafjörður will begin charging drivers in September, only months after opening to traffic in June. The tolls will help pay part of the road’s construction, operation and maintenance costs.

Vegagerðin said collection will operate under the name Spölur ehf. The system is designed to run without registration or payment stops. Cameras will record vehicle licence plates, retrieve vehicle details from the national vehicle registry and send each month’s bill to the driver’s online bank.

Drivers will also be able to review their trips and find toll information at spolur.is, where they can pay for individual journeys. The authority said the charges reflect benefits from the new road, including shorter travel times, lower fuel and operating costs, and improved driving conditions.

A single trip will cost 1,500 krona for vehicles weighing less than 3.5 tonnes. The charge will rise to 2,100 krona for vehicles between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes, and 4,500 krona for vehicles above 7.5 tonnes. The vehicle class is based on its total weight.

Discounts and monthly caps will apply to small and medium-sized vehicles. Owners of the smallest vehicles will pay no more than 18,750 krona a month, while the ceiling for medium-sized vehicles will be 26,250 krona. Both caps are reached after 22 trips. Heavy vehicles will have no monthly payment ceiling.

The toll collection will be fully automatic, and road users will not need to register or pay separately when driving on the road.
