Traffic chaos as key intersection closed for upgrades

Drivers in Reykjavik are experiencing significant traffic delays at the intersection of Grensásvegur and Miklubraut. The congestion stems from the closure of the right-turn lane from Miklubraut to Grensásvegur for westbound traffic.

The ongoing construction project aims to enhance safety and traffic flow. A key part of the work involves installing four new raised pedestrian crossings at the intersection to encourage slower vehicle speeds. Additionally, lighting will be improved with new lampposts and streetlights to enhance visibility for pedestrians.

Despite the disruption, project manager Ylfa Rakel Ólafsdóttir of the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration urges the public to remain patient. She noted that longer workdays would not necessarily lead to shorter closure periods. Drivers are advised to exercise caution and be considerate of the workers in the area.

Further modifications to other turns at this intersection are planned for the coming weeks. The ultimate goal of these upgrades is to reduce traffic speed and improve pedestrian safety.
