Tourists from Spain, Italy, Germany among 13 killed in Peru plane crash

A tragic accident near Nazca, Peru, claimed the lives of 11 tourists and two crew members when their small plane crashed on Saturday. The victims were identified as nationals of Spain, Italy, and Germany, according to the Ministry of Transport and Communications. The exact number of citizens from each country has not yet been specified.

The aircraft, a Cessna Grand Caravan C-208 with a capacity for 12 passengers, had departed from Pisco airport in the Ica region around midday. Its intended route was to fly over the renowned Nazca Lines geoglyphs. Approximately two kilometers from Nazca airport, the crew reported an emergency situation to air traffic control before all radio contact was lost. The crash occurred around 1:00 PM local time.

Emergency services, including personnel from the Directorate General of Civil Aeronautics (DGAC), aeronautical firefighters, and the National Police, were immediately dispatched to the scene. Tragically, no survivors were found. The DGAC and the Aviation Accident Investigation Commission have initiated protocols to determine the cause of the crash.

Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori expressed deep regret over the incident. She stated that the Minister of Transport and Communications is overseeing the investigation, while the Foreign Minister is in contact with the consulates of the foreign nationals who perished. The possibility of temporarily closing the airport from which the Aerodiana plane departed is also being evaluated. The Public Prosecutor's Office has begun the process of recovering and identifying the bodies.
