Traditional Pastry Praised at National Evaluation

In Sveti Jurij ob Ščavnici, a heartwarming event unfolded as part of the municipal holiday, celebrating the 32nd anniversary of Slovenia's independence. The 11th national evaluation of Prleške kvasenice, a beloved traditional pastry, brought together thirteen talented women, mostly members of rural women's associations. This event, a collaboration between the local association and the Zveza kmetic Slovenije (Association of Farmers' Wives of Slovenia), not only showcased exceptional culinary skills but also served as a vital effort to preserve a cherished culinary heritage.

The Prleške kvasenice, a rustic yet delicious pastry typically baked in a traditional wood-fired oven and served as a sweet treat after meals, holds a special place in the hearts of Slovenians. The competition highlighted the dedication of these women, who continue to bake these delicacies using recipes inherited from their grandmothers and mothers. The judging commission, led by Irena Ule, president of the Association of Farmers' Wives of Slovenia, lauded the participants for their commitment to maintaining this tradition, emphasizing the special value of this Prleška delicacy.

Kristina Prašnički from Veržej emerged as the champion, earning a near-perfect score for her exquisite kvasenice. Her victory, along with the numerous gold, silver, and bronze medals awarded, underscores the high quality of the entries and the enduring appeal of this traditional dish. The event, graced by local officials including Mayor Andrej Vrzel, celebrated not just a pastry, but the cultural identity and generational knowledge that these rural women so passionately uphold.
