Truck rams into vehicles at Kwara market

Traders and commuters at Ganmo Market in Kwara State experienced a terrifying ordeal on Thursday when a speeding truck lost control and plowed into several vehicles. The incident, which occurred along the Ilorin–Ajase-Ipo Federal Highway, sent shockwaves through the bustling market, highlighting the dangers of reckless driving on Nigerian roads.

I was on my way from the Ilorin axis to Amoyo when I noticed the truck speeding behind me and other vehicles. It was only by God’s grace that we survived when the truck rammed into us and crushed our vehicles. I tried to avoid being hit, but I could not. I had to jump off my motorcycle to save my life.

Eyewitness accounts describe the crash as devastating, involving no fewer than seven vehicles. The truck, reportedly descending from the Ilorin axis, first struck a tricycle, then careened into five other vehicles in rapid succession. The chaotic scene saw vehicles crushed and debris scattered, causing widespread panic as people fled for safety. Thankfully, despite the severity of the impact and the extensive damage to the vehicles, no lives were lost, though several individuals sustained injuries.

I heard a loud noise from a distance, and when I got to the scene, I saw that the truck had already collided with several vehicles. It was chaotic.

The driver of the truck, however, fled the scene, leaving behind the wreckage and those affected. Victims recounted harrowing experiences, with one motorcyclist narrowly escaping serious harm by jumping off his bike. Operatives from the Ganmo Division of the Nigeria Police Force responded swiftly to restore order, while bystanders assisted the injured. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and greater accountability for drivers who endanger public safety.

This car by the gutter was parked directly in front of my shop. The owner, a woman carrying her child on her back, had just sent a young girl, likely her house help, into the market to buy something. As the truck approached, it first knocked a tricycle into the gutter. It then rammed into a bus, which in turn crashed into the private car where the woman was.
