Two More Holidays Added: Labor Day and Constitution Day Confirmed as Public Holidays from This Year

In a move that brings long-awaited recognition to two significant dates, South Korea has officially designated both Labor Day (May 1st) and Constitution Day (July 17th) as public holidays. The decision, confirmed by the Ministry of Personnel and Management after approval from the State Council, marks a significant step in ensuring equitable holiday benefits for all citizens.

For years, while private sector workers enjoyed Labor Day as a paid holiday, public officials and teachers were often excluded. This disparity is now rectified, as the holiday, previously known as 'Workers' Day,' is officially renamed 'Labor Day' and recognized nationwide. Similarly, Constitution Day, established in 1949 to commemorate the promulgation of the Constitution on July 17, 1948, had been removed from the public holiday calendar in 2008 with the introduction of the five-day work week. Its reinstatement acknowledges its historical importance.

The inclusion of these dates means that alternative holiday provisions will apply if they coincide with a weekend or another public holiday. This ensures that the spirit of these commemorative days is fully honored.
