Two security agents die and 70 civilians are kidnapped in northwest Nigeria

An attack by armed men in Nigeria's northwestern Zamfara state resulted in the deaths of two security agents and the kidnapping of approximately 70 civilians. The assault occurred early Sunday morning in the Kasuwar Daji village within the Kaura Namoda district.

Military sources confirmed the casualties, stating that troops engaged and repelled the attackers, killing ten of them. A captain from the Army, speaking anonymously, reported the loss of one soldier and injuries to three others, who are receiving medical attention. Military spokesperson Olaniyi Osoba's statement corroborated the attack and the deaths of one army officer and one police officer, clarifying that rumors of six military deaths were inaccurate.

While Osoba acknowledged the abduction of numerous villagers, he did not provide an exact number of hostages. However, he confirmed that Nigerian security forces managed to rescue nine individuals. Residents described how dozens of armed men arrived on motorcycles, firing indiscriminately into the village and targeting both civilians and a military post.

Many villagers fled to the mountains to escape the attackers, but some were unable to escape and were taken captive. One resident estimated that over 70 villagers were kidnapped, with some unconfirmed reports of rescues. Northwest Nigeria, along with central regions, frequently experiences attacks by criminal gangs, often referred to as "bandits," who conduct mass assaults and kidnappings for ransom. These groups are sometimes labeled as "terrorists" by authorities. The region also faces threats from the jihadist group Boko Haram and its splinter faction, the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), as well as attacks by groups linked to the Islamic State-Sahel Province (ISSP) in neighboring Kebbi and Sokoto states.
