U.S. Condemns Violent Escalation in Colombia After Bomb Attack Kills 20 Civilians

The United States has unequivocally condemned the recent surge in violence plaguing southwestern Colombia, a stark reminder of the persistent security challenges facing the nation. The U.S. Embassy in Bogotá expressed its solidarity with Colombia and the victims of a brutal car bomb attack in the Cauca department. This attack, which tragically claimed the lives of 20 civilians on Saturday, has been attributed to dissident factions of the FARC. The explosive-laden cylinder detonated as it passed several public and private transport vehicles in the El Túnel sector of Cajibío municipality. This incident is part of a broader pattern of violence in the region, including recent attacks in the neighboring Valle del Cauca department, where explosive devices were targeted at military installations in Cali and Palmira. These actions are linked to dissident groups of the Central General Staff (EMC) of the former FARC. The embassy stressed that the violent actions of U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations and other illegal armed groups cannot be tolerated, emphasizing that a secure environment is essential for a free Colombia and a strong democracy. Washington reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting Colombia's security, a stance echoed by U.S. intelligence officials who have identified the EMC, led by the elusive Iván Mordisco, as a significant regional threat. This group, along with the National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrilla, is implicated in the production and trafficking of cocaine, further destabilizing the region.
