Uruguay Begins Major Roadworks on Montevideo's Eastern Access Routes Near Carrasco Airport

The Uruguayan Ministry of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP) has initiated a series of major road construction projects targeting critical points on the eastern access routes to Montevideo. This comprehensive plan aims to address long-standing issues of congestion and connectivity, particularly around the Aeropuerto de Carrasco.

The project, estimated to cost approximately $74 million, is slated for completion over 26 months. It will be implemented in stages, with initial work already underway at the intersection of routes 101 and 102. This phase involves adding new approach lanes, constructing pedestrian walkways, and upgrading traffic signals, all monitored by the ministry's Intelligent Traffic Systems Center. These initial works are expected to take about four months.

Further stages include improvements along Avenida Calcagno, creating a new connection to the service roads of Route 101 and the existing roundabout near Carrasco Airport. This segment is scheduled for completion in eight months. The plan also encompasses structural reforms at two key intersections involving Avenida de las Américas: one at the old Carrasco Airport entrance and another at Avenida Racine.

At the old airport entrance, a new elevated viaduct will connect Avenida de las Américas with Route 101, while maintaining the lower-level roundabout to reduce travel times. Near Avenida Racine, a new lower-level roundabout will be constructed alongside a viaduct, and a pedestrian passage will link both sectors of Parque Roosevelt.

These interventions are designed to resolve historical traffic problems, enhance infrastructure, and improve the flow of both people and goods within the metropolitan area, particularly benefiting access to and from the international airport.
