Uruguay braces for rising temperatures amid persistent fog warnings

Uruguay is set to experience a week of rising autumn temperatures, but meteorologists are issuing strong warnings about persistent fog and reduced visibility across the country. The Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology (Inumet) advises extreme caution, particularly during morning and evening hours, due to the widespread presence of fog.

The common denominator throughout the country will be the presence of fog, in the morning and at night, so it will be important to drive with prudence and caution.

Meteorologist José Serra noted that while temperatures will remain autumnal, with averages around 17°C in Montevideo, the north and west will see slightly milder conditions. Serra also highlighted significant air mass shifts, making it difficult to predict the duration of this warmer autumn weather. He emphasized the need for prudence when traveling, especially on roads.

Fellow meteorologist Guillermo Ramis echoed these concerns, forecasting temperatures between 7°C and 17°C throughout the week, along with continued "agrometeorological frosts." He specifically warned drivers to be extremely careful. Mario Bidegain also shared forecasts predicting isolated showers on Monday.

Inumet's official forecast corroborates these warnings, predicting significant visibility reductions from Monday, May 25, through Thursday, May 28, due to persistent fog and mist. For Monday, May 25, 2026, Inumet anticipates fluctuating temperatures between 6°C and 21°C nationwide, with Montevideo experiencing partly cloudy to cloudy conditions, fog, mist, and a low chance of rain throughout the day.
