Uruguay to mark Day of Student Martyrs with march and tributes

Uruguay is set to commemorate the Day of Student Martyrs on Friday, August 14, 2026, an event marked by a significant university march and public gathering. The commemoration begins at 6:00 PM on the esplanade of the Faculty of Law at the University of the Republic (Udelar) before proceeding to Plaza 1º de Mayo, located in front of the Legislative Palace.

The Day of Student Martyrs honors the memory of Líber Arce, who is recognized as the first student martyr in Uruguay. Arce died in 1968 from gunshot wounds sustained when police forces opened fire during a protest concerning student transportation fares. According to Udelar, Arce's death was followed by numerous other incidents where students involved in protests, meetings, or other activism were attacked, killed, or disappeared by authorities.

Gonzalo Samudio, responsible for organizing the event for the Federation of University Students of Uruguay (FEUU), detailed the day's schedule. Following the initial gathering at Udelar, the march will proceed to the main event at Plaza 1º de Mayo. The commemoration will conclude with musical performances by popular Uruguayan bands, including Trotsky Vengarán, Cayó la Cabra, Papina de Palma, and Casi Guille.

In observance of the commemoration, several universities have announced the cessation of activities around 5:00 PM. Additionally, some students will visit the Buceo, Norte, and Cerro cemeteries in the morning to pay tribute to the student martyrs, tending to their graves and delivering orations with the consent of their families. This initiative aims to provide a more personal and respectful homage to those who lost their lives during periods of political unrest.
