Valjevo Police Brutality Case: Prosecution Interviews Victims, Officers Not Yet Questioned

The Organized Crime Prosecution (TOK) has interviewed 25 out of 27 citizens who filed criminal complaints following a police intervention in Valjevo on the night of August 14-15, 2025. According to Insajder, TOK stated that medical documentation confirms one victim suffered severe bodily injuries, while the others sustained minor ones. The prosecution also noted that police officers from the Valjevo, Užice, and Prijepolje police administrations were engaged in maintaining public order during the gathering. However, these officers have not yet been interrogated by TOK. Instead, their statements were previously collected by the Ministry of Interior's Sector for Internal Control, acting on the order of the Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Valjevo. TOK received the case files, including the internal control report, on May 15, 2026. The prosecution is continuing its pre-investigation by interviewing remaining victims and witnesses, and gathering further data to establish the facts. Due to the ongoing pre-investigation, TOK stated it cannot provide more details to avoid hindering evidence collection and jeopardizing the proceedings. The incident occurred during a protest in Valjevo, where numerous accusations of excessive police force emerged. Videos circulating on social media and in media outlets showed officers using force during detentions. Citizen groups and human rights organizations reported cases of police brutality. The Ministry of Interior maintained that police acted lawfully, while opposition parties and segments of the public called for an independent investigation into the alleged abuses of power.
