Victim's family urges prosecutors to appeal sentences in BRI bank official murder case

The legal representatives for the family of the murdered Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) official are pushing for an appeal against the sentences handed down to the three main defendants in the case. The family's lawyer, Kurniawan Adi Nugroho, stated that while the court's efforts in concluding the lengthy trial are appreciated, the verdicts for the primary perpetrators do not align with the family's pursuit of justice.

The victim's family appreciates the judges who have examined this case over a long period with all the dynamics of the trial. However, after hearing the verdict against Ken, Dwi Hartono, and Antonius, which we deem not maximal.

Nugroho expressed that the family believes all 16 defendants were aware of the risks involved in the kidnapping, which ultimately led to the victim's death. However, he argued that the three main defendants bore the greatest responsibility and therefore deserved more severe punishment. "From the beginning, we considered this a premeditated murder. It's impossible for someone who is kidnapped, sees the faces of the perpetrators, to then be released. Logically, that is impossible," Kurniawan stated.

The court sentenced Candy alias Ken and Dwi Hartono to 13 years in prison each, also ordering them to pay restitution of Rp 1.25 billion. Antonius Marjuni received a 10-year sentence and was ordered to pay Rp 750 million in restitution. Another defendant, Erasmus Wawo, was sentenced to nine years and ordered to pay Rp 100 million in restitution. Eka Wahyu Hidayatullah was acquitted.
