Vilnius Allocates 1 Million Euros for Civil Defense Shelters

The Vilnius municipality is set to invest 1 million euros in bolstering civil defense shelters, aiming to enhance safety for residents and institutions. This significant funding initiative will be available to both private citizens and public bodies seeking to improve their preparedness for emergencies.

The allocated funds are designated for improving access to existing shelters and for the installation of protective measures, such as window security features. The municipality will also assist eligible entities in preparing applications for funding from programs offered by the Ministry of the Interior. This support is crucial for ensuring that a wider range of facilities can be brought up to safety standards.

Applications will be open to homeowners' associations, state, and municipal institutions, provided their properties are either listed as shelters or can be included in the official registry. Notably, educational institutions that do not currently possess official shelters will also be eligible to apply for funds specifically for window protection measures. The maximum funding available per object is 20,000 euros, with the municipality covering 100% of expenses for its own institutions. The first application call is scheduled for September.
