West Java governor offers personal reward for capturing muggers

West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi has announced a personal reward of Rp10 million for citizens who capture street criminals and muggers, emphasizing that the funds are from his own savings and will not touch the provincial budget. This initiative aims to provide a swift intervention against the rising tide of street crime.

Mulyadi explained that the reward system taps into Indonesian culture, which he believes is motivated by public recognition and incentives. He drew parallels to academic or regional competitions, suggesting that such awards foster diligence and participation.

The governor also highlighted the psychological aspect of the reward scheme, designed to curb vigilantism. He urged the public not to resort to violence, stating that handing over suspects alive to the police is the condition for receiving the reward. "The logic is simple. If there's a motorcycle thief, don't beat them to death. If there's a reward from me, it's worth Rp10 million if they're delivered," Mulyadi said.

However, Mulyadi stressed that the captured individuals must be handed over to the police without severe injuries. While minor scratches might be acceptable, significant harm would disqualify the captors from receiving the reward. This condition underscores a commitment to ensuring suspects are brought to justice through official channels, rather than through mob violence.
