World Cup test for Nicaragua in debut of new coach against South Africa

Nicaragua's national football team is set for a significant international test as they face World Cup-bound South Africa in a friendly match. This game marks the debut of the team's new coach, Argentine Juan Cruz Real, who has brought a young generation of players to Johannesburg with the goal of gaining crucial international exposure.

For South Africa, known as Bafana Bafana, this match represents their final opportunity to fine-tune their squad in front of a home crowd before departing for the 2026 World Cup. Coach Hugo Broos aims to make final adjustments, working with players who are likely fatigued after demanding domestic club finals. Coach Cruz Real has opted to leave behind four key players for Nicaragua: captain Juan Barrera, Byron Bonilla, Josué Quijano, and Christian Reyes, all due to medical issues. However, he plans to use this high-stakes friendly to assess promising young talents. Among those he will be watching closely are 20-year-old midfielder Amadeus Zamora, developed in Europe and seen as a future playmaker, as well as forwards Oliver Bello, Efraín Mejía, and Widman Talavera, and defender Anyelo Velásquez, who are expected to be the next generation of stars for the national team.
