Xenophobic attack: Nigeria alerts citizens ahead of South Africa protests

The Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg has issued a stark warning to its citizens residing in South Africa, alerting them to imminent nationwide anti-foreigner demonstrations scheduled for May 4, 2026. This advisory comes amid rising xenophobic tensions and organized efforts by groups advocating for the removal of foreigners from the country.

All Nigerian nationals are strongly advised to avoid engaging any demonstrators or confronting them.

According to the consulate's notice, these anti-foreigner movements are circulating invitations for a nationwide shutdown, pressing the South African government to address their grievances. Organizers claim that foreigners are disproportionately benefiting from the country's resources and opportunities, demanding the urgent departure of all foreigners, regardless of their documentation status. A march is planned across all nine provinces, with specific gathering points identified in major cities like Johannesburg.

Nigerian business owners are also advised to consider closing their shops/businesses during the duration of the march, as there are no guarantees that the protests will be peaceful, and foreign-owned businesses are expected to become soft targets for the demonstrators.

In light of the potential for significant disruptions and the explicit targeting of foreign-owned businesses, the consulate strongly advises Nigerians to exercise extreme caution. They are urged to avoid any engagement with demonstrators, monitor local media closely, and take necessary safety precautions. Business owners are particularly advised to consider temporarily closing their establishments, as there is no guarantee the protests will remain peaceful.
