Xinjiang Bridge Collapse Blamed on Defects, Not Tourists

Authorities in China's western Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region have officially declared that construction flaws, not the actions of tourists, were responsible for the tragic collapse of the Jiangjun Bridge last August. This finding directly refutes earlier suggestions that the bridge's failure was due to visitors deliberately shaking it.

The investigative report, released recently, points to "legal violations, gross negligence and dereliction of duty" as the root causes behind the incident. These failures led to the bridge tilting, a catastrophic event that claimed the lives of five people and left 24 others injured. The report emphasizes that the bridge's structural integrity was compromised by internal issues, not external actions.

Significantly, the investigation also highlighted that the bridge was operating far below its maximum capacity at the time of the collapse. Approximately 120 tourists were on the bridge, which is designed to hold up to 2,500 people. This detail further underscores the conclusion that the failure stemmed from inherent defects in the bridge's construction and management, rather than overcrowding or misuse by visitors.
