Yellow Code Warnings Issued for Heat, Storms, and Strong Winds Across Romania

Romania's National Meteorological Administration issued multiple yellow code warnings on Saturday, August 8, signaling a day of extreme weather across the country. Heat advisories were put in place for Banat, Oltenia, Dobrogea, and most of Muntenia from 10:00 to 21:00. During this period, the region experienced intense heat and high thermal discomfort, with the temperature-humidity index (ITU) exceeding the critical threshold of 80 units. Maximum temperatures were expected to reach between 34 and 37 degrees Celsius.

Simultaneously, a yellow code warning for strong winds was active from 10:00 to 23:00, affecting most of Moldova, eastern Muntenia, and northern Dobrogea. Wind gusts were forecast to reach speeds of 50-70 km/h. Localized wind intensifications were also expected in western and southwestern areas, with gusts of 40-45 km/h and isolated speeds exceeding 50-55 km/h.

A third yellow code warning focused on atmospheric instability, strong winds, storms, and significant torrential downpours. This alert was valid from 12:00 to 22:00, targeting western Muntenia, eastern Oltenia, southern and eastern Transylvania, and mountainous regions. In these areas, wind gusts were predicted to reach 50-70 km/h, with isolated gusts over 80 km/h. The forecast also included torrential rain, lightning, and isolated small hail (1-2 cm). Short-term rainfall was expected to be 15-20 liters per square meter, potentially reaching 30-50 liters per square meter in isolated mountainous areas.

Overall, Saturday's weather forecast indicated maximum temperatures ranging from 23 degrees Celsius in northern Moldova to 36 degrees in Oltenia and southwestern Muntenia. Minimum temperatures were expected between 9 degrees in eastern Transylvanian depressions and 24 degrees Celsius on the coast. Tropical nights were anticipated in Dobrogea and isolated areas of Oltenia and Muntenia. The warnings highlighted the potential for severe weather events, including storms, strong winds, and heavy rain, across various parts of Romania.
