Army Confirms Plot to Overthrow Tinubu, Tells Court Ex-Governor Sylva Was Involved

The Nigerian Army has presented compelling evidence in the Federal High Court in Abuja, confirming a plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu's democratically elected government via a coup d'état. A soldier, whose identity was protected by court order, testified as the fourth prosecution witness, detailing the investigation that led to the apprehension of six alleged masterminds. The case, filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, also implicates former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva, who is reportedly at large.

The investigation was initiated following credible intelligence received by the then Chief of Army Staff, General O. O. Oluyede. The intelligence pointed to a conspiracy involving Colonel M. A. Ma’aji, other serving military officers, and civilians. The witness, identified only as 'AAA', confirmed that his team's analysis of the report found it to be credible, prompting a thorough investigation and subsequent arrests.

During the testimony, crucial evidence was presented, including a Samsung Galaxy phone retrieved from Colonel Ma’aji and a jotter recovered from his residence. The jotter contained detailed operational plans, a list of high-ranking government officials targeted for assassination, and information regarding proposed political and structural changes post-coup. Forensic analysis of the phone further corroborated the elaborate plans and linked Colonel Ma’aji and others to the alleged coup plot, underscoring the gravity of the threat to national stability.
