Cuba plunged into darkness by nationwide blackout

Cuba is once again grappling with a widespread power outage, leaving the entire nation in darkness. The state-owned electricity company, UNE, announced a "total disconnection" within the national electricity grid. The blackout affected the entire country, including the capital, Havana, with the announcement made early Monday. This incident follows a series of blackouts, with the national grid having collapsed three times in the nine days prior to this latest event. The country's already strained and outdated power generation system has been severely impacted by the U.S. oil blockade, which has been in effect for months. Cuba's electricity supply relies heavily on oil products, accounting for over 80 percent of its power, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). The recurring blackouts highlight the critical state of Cuba's energy infrastructure and the significant challenges it faces.
