Dominican President Abinader to lead ruling party

Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader is set to take the helm of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), assuming its presidency for the 2026-2030 term. His selection was part of a unified slate that also appointed the party's remaining national leadership.

Deligne Ascención will serve as the first executive vice president, and Juan Garrigó Mejía will take over as the general secretary. This latter position was previously held by Garrigó Mejía's mother, Carolina Mejía, the current mayor of the capital, who is seeking the PRM's presidential candidacy for the 2028 general elections.

The newly elected national authorities of the PRM are scheduled to be sworn in on September 5 and will hold their positions for four years. In contrast, territorial authorities were chosen through local processes for two-year terms.

Outgoing PRM President José Ignacio Paliza highlighted the party's unity as a key strength. He noted that over the past eight years, the party has bolstered its regional structures, modernized its organizational methods, expanded its national reach, and strengthened its institutional framework. The outgoing general secretary expressed satisfaction with her completed duties and confidence in the new leadership.
