Enoch Burke to Remain in Jail for Refusing to Obey Court Order

Enoch Burke continues his protest from behind prison bars, refusing to comply with a High Court order that bars him from Wilson's Hospital School. Burke, a former history and German teacher, has been embroiled in a legal battle with the Co Westmeath school since 2022, stemming from his suspension and subsequent dismissal after he refused to address a student by a new name and pronoun.

Appearing via video link before Mr. Justice Brian Cregan, Burke was given an opportunity to purge his contempt of court, which would have led to his release. However, he maintained his stance, stating he should be in his classroom, not in prison. When asked if he would refrain from trespassing at the school if released, Burke reiterated his position, asserting his right to attend his workplace.

Mr. Justice Cregan made it clear that Burke was in breach of a High Court order and that the court, as well as the school, did not wish for him to remain incarcerated. Burke could be released at any time if he committed to staying away from the school premises. Despite this, Burke's unwavering commitment to his principles has kept him imprisoned for over 650 days, highlighting a deeply entrenched conflict between his religious beliefs and the school's directives.
